Let’s sit down and discuss your strengths.

We will just jump right in. What are your strengths? Write down your top 5 strengths.

A few months ago, I would have written down these strengths:

  • Hard Working
  • I work well with others
  • I am creative
  • I always try to do my best
  • I am a quick learner

But now I understand that those are “strengths,” but they are not strengths that set me aside from others. I am sure that all of these strengths are commonly found on resumes.

The problem is I am different than others. I know that I have my own personal strengths. But what are they?

At the beginning of August I was privileged to receive a free copy of StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tom Rath. After taking the StrengthsFinder test, I was amazed at how accurate the results were. They described me perfectly. And not only did they describe me, but they described me in ways that I had never thought of.

Ever since, the way I organize my life and plan for my future has drastically changed.

My Five Strengths

Futuristic

People who are especially talented in the Futuristic theme are inspired by the future and what could be. They inspire others with their visions of the future.

Strategic

People who are especially talented in the Strategic theme create alternative ways to proceed. Faced with any given scenario, they can quickly spot the relevant patterns and issues.

Ideation

People who are especially talented in the Ideation theme are fascinated by ideas. They are able to find connections between seemingly disparate phenomena.

Individualization

People who are especially talented in the Individualization theme are intrigued with the unique qualities of each person. They have a gift for figuring out how people who are different can work together productively.

Learner

People who are especially talented in the Learner theme have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. In particular, the process of learning, rather than the outcome, excites them.

The descriptions were quoted from the information given to me on the StrengthsFinder website after taking the test.

The descriptions will not benefit you much. However, you are also given more in-depth descriptions. The most valuable to me was the Ideas for Action.

The Ideas for Action will help you think of ways to actually use your strengths, how to deal with other people who have different strengths, finding other people with complementary strengths, and much more.

I now have a better idea of what sort of occupation I want to have in the future. I can now explain to employers my strengths and how I may play a role in the company or organization.

Unfortunately, to take the StrengthsFinder test you must purchase a copy of the book. The link below is an affiliate link to purchase the book for about $13 on Amazon.

“StrengthsFinder 2.0: A New and Upgraded Edition of the Online Test from Gallup’s Now, Discover Your Strengths” (Tom Rath)

Whether you get the book or not, knowing your strengths will allow you to grow. So sit down for a few minutes and try to figure out your strengths. Although, even this test can not truly give you your strengths. Discovering your strengths is a life long process.

Have you taken the StrengthsFinder test? What were your strengths? And if you haven’t taken the test, what do you believe your strengths are? Write them in the comment section below.
